Lights not responding? Try these first.

  • Make sure the lights are plugged in, switched on and in the same room as your iPhone.
  • Fully close any other app that controls the same lights, such as duoCo Strip. These lights usually accept only one connection at a time.
  • Check that Demo Mode is off in LightCue's Settings. While it's on, your real lights stay disconnected.

01Getting started

  1. Plug in and switch on your lights.
  2. Open LightCue and allow Bluetooth access when asked.
  3. On the Lights tab, tap Scan for Lights. Lights LightCue can control appear under Discovered.
  4. Tap a light to add it to My Lights, and give it a name and location, such as “Desk” in “Office”.

You only need to do this once per light. After that, LightCue reconnects to your lights on its own whenever you open the app.

Don't have lights yet? Turn on Demo Mode in Settings to try LightCue with simulated lights. Demo lights, colors and scenes are kept separate from yours.

02LightCue can't find my lights

  • Close other light apps. If duoCo Strip or a similar app is connected to a light, LightCue can't see it. Swipe that app away in the app switcher, then scan again. Unplugging the light for ten seconds also clears a stuck connection.
  • Move closer. Bluetooth range is usually about one room. Walls and metal fixtures shorten it.
  • Check that your lights are compatible. LightCue works with lights that use the ELK-BLEDOM controller. In Bluetooth, their names usually start with ELK-BLE, LEDBLE, MELK, ELK-BULB or ELK-LAMPL. Lights from Philips Hue, Govee, LIFX and similar brands use different protocols and won't appear. If your box or manual pointed you to the duoCo Strip app, your lights very likely work.
  • Check Hidden Lights. A light you removed with “Remove and Hide from Scans” won't show up again until you unhide it. On the Lights tab, tap More (…) → Hidden Lights, then tap Unhide.

03Bluetooth messages

MessageWhat to do
Bluetooth Is OffTurn on Bluetooth in Control Center or in Settings → Bluetooth.
Bluetooth Access NeededTap Open Settings, or go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and turn on LightCue.
Bluetooth Not AvailableThis device doesn't support the type of Bluetooth connection your lights need.
Connection FailedMake sure no other app is connected to the light, move closer, and try again. If it keeps failing, unplug the light for ten seconds.

04A light keeps disconnecting

When a light drops out, LightCue keeps trying to reconnect and picks it up again as soon as it's back in range. If a light stays disconnected:

  • Check that it still has power. Some strips turn off at the wall switch or their own remote.
  • Bring your iPhone closer, or move the light's controller box out from behind metal or electronics.
  • On the Lights tab, tap More (…) → Disconnect All, then close and reopen LightCue to start fresh connections.
  • Unplug the light for ten seconds and plug it back in.

05Siri & Shortcuts

Try phrases like “Set LightCue to Movie Night”, “Turn off lights with LightCue” or “Turn on lights with LightCue”. You'll also find these actions in the Shortcuts app, in Spotlight and on the Action button.

  • Siri doesn't recognize a scene. Say the scene's name exactly as it's spelled in LightCue. Short, distinct names work best.
  • The action runs but the lights don't change. Siri and Shortcuts control lights the same way the app does, so your iPhone needs Bluetooth on and has to be within range of the lights.
  • A shortcut says the scene no longer exists. The scene was deleted or replaced by an import. Edit the shortcut and choose the scene again.

06Colors don't match the screen

Inexpensive LED strips often run blue, especially on white. LightCue corrects for this, but LEDs vary from batch to batch, and a strip will never look exactly like a phone screen. For whites, start with the built-in Warm White, Neutral White and Cool White, then adjust and save your own.

Colors also look different depending on where the light shines. A strip bouncing off a colored wall picks up some of that wall's color.

07Removing and hiding lights

To remove a light, tap it on the Lights tab, scroll down and tap Remove Light. You'll have two choices:

  • Remove Light disconnects the light and clears its name and settings. It shows up again the next time you scan.
  • Remove and Hide from Scans also keeps it out of future scans. This is handy for a neighbor's lights. Hidden lights are listed under More (…) → Hidden Lights on the Lights tab.

For a quick removal without hiding, swipe left on a light in My Lights, or touch and hold it, and tap Remove.

08Moving to a new iPhone

  1. On your old iPhone, open Settings in LightCue and tap Export Colors & Scenes. Save the file somewhere you can reach from the new phone, such as iCloud Drive, or AirDrop it.
  2. On your new iPhone, scan for your lights and add them on the Lights tab.
  3. In Settings, tap Import Colors & Scenes and pick the file.

Importing replaces the colors and scenes already on that iPhone. The backup holds your colors and scenes, but each iPhone has to find your lights for itself, so add them on the new phone first.
